Ford-Magna Partnership Targets Carbon Fiber Subframes

Ford-Magna Partnership

Automakers are constantly pushing the limits for performance and fuel economy by recreating and refining powertrains. Ford is one of the few automakers taking measures to improve fuel economy by dropping weight as well. The manufacturer recently partnered up with Magna to create new carbon fiber subframes.

No matter the make or model, odds are a vehicle’s subframe is primarily made of traditional metals; the new Ford-Magna partnership looks to change that. The pair have created what could very well become the next generation of automotive engineering.

New carbon fiber subframes could dramatically reduce the weight of a vehicle. A subframe made from carbon fiber cuts weight by around 34%, compared to a traditional subframe. The newest innovation is made of two molded pieces and four metal components. By comparison, a traditional subframe is made from 45 steel parts.

Surely a lightweight carbon fiber subframe is weak, right? Wrong. In fact, a carbon fiber subframe has passed all of Magna’s testing and is just as durable as a standard subframe. Ford and Magna have a history together when it comes to performance. Magna developed the Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500’s carbon fiber grille opening reinforcement, among other projects. A lighter subframe would lead to weight reduction, increased performance, and a rise in fuel efficiency.

We can’t wait to see the production results of the Ford-Magna partnership here at Nick Nicholas Ford!

Ford Developing New Pothole Mitigation System

The modern automobile industry has seen a number of new safety and technology innovations just within the past few years. It seems like there’s a driver alert sensor for just about everything, from impending collisions to pedestrians passing behind your vehicle while backing up. However, Ford is taking it even further, developing a new Pothole Mitigation System in order to prolong the life of your tires and prevent the shock of hitting a pothole head-on, at full speed.

Pothole Mitigation System

So what will this system do exactly? Experts at Ford pointed out that swerving to avoid potholes is not always possible, even though the system will make use of exterior cameras that monitor the ground and display pothole information to the driver. In the situations where hitting the pothole is just unavoidable, the mitigation system will automatically adjust the vehicle’s suspension in order to lessen the bump and reduce its severity.

Potholes are one of the few road issues that self-driving vehicles struggle with, so investing in tech that can sense potholes might be a good plan for the future. Plus, considering a 2016 survey that states that a staggering 39% of drivers are affected by potholes, we at Nick Nicholas Ford think adding a Pothole Mitigation System to the vehicles we sell is a great idea!

Ford Last Mile Mobility Challenge’s Carr-E

The Ford Last Mile Mobility Challenge put the best of Ford’s employees to the test. It challenged employees to develop new innovations to its vehicles. This led to the Carr-E, developed by Ford employees to improve safety and utilize technology.

The innovation challenged specifically challenged Ford employees to develop transportation devices that could be used in areas where your car might not be able to go. One of these devices was the Carr-E system, developed by Ford systems engineer Kilian Vas. It’s an innovative personal transportation system that fits easily into a car trunk and has multiple options for transportation.

Carr-E can go 14 miles at up to 11 miles per hour. It moves about on four wheels and can be used to transport people or objects. It can even transport objects alone thanks to an electronic transmitter.

“When developing Carr-E,” said Vas, “I was inspired by Ford’s expansion into both an auto and a mobility company, but I’m also aware of how rapidly cities are growing and how getting around urban areas will become more complicated. I really wanted to create a device that makes commuting easier and more fun.”

Innovation is always around the corner, thanks to Ford!

New Ford Inventions Set Records in 2015

When it comes to innovation, the Ford Motor Company has been a leader from the beginning. Just imagine the automotive industry without the assembly line. Even today, Ford researchers and engineers are constantly working on new projects to advance mobility around the world.

In 2015, Ford employees set a new record for the most new Ford inventions patented in a single year—nearly 6,000 new inventions in 2015. That is a 36% increase over the number in 2014.

These inventions will help make big advancements in mobility across the globe, from autonomous vehicles, wearable devices, electric vehicles, eBikes, navigation, and ride-sharing platforms.

Ford Partnership with Petty’s Garage Produces Mustang GT King Editions

Mustang GT King Editions

Ford recently announced their collaboration with NASCAR icon Richard Petty in creating three special edition Ford Mustangs. Petty’s Garage used a 2016 model as a base and built the new versions to Petty’s specifications to create some of the most powerful and performance-focused Mutangs yet. The Mustang GT King editions are capable of up to a striking 727hp.

The way this feat was achieved is no small matter. Petty’s Garage took the standard 5.0-liter engine and added the Ford Performance supercharger to boost the horsepower output to 670. If consumers want the 727hp mentioned above, they have the option of upgrading the engine with a smaller supercharger pulley, which is what gives the Mustang GT King edition its incredible power.

If you’d like to get your hands on one, these special editions will be in limited quantity, but can be ordered from your local Ford dealership. Petty’s Garage will be producing 243 King edition models, 43 of the King Premier, and 14 King Premier convertibles. In addition to the enhanced performance, all Mustang GT King editions come with sleek matte black accents, including black 20-inch wheels.

Not sure about you, but all of us here at Nick Nicholas Ford think these special editions are pretty sweet! Tell us what you think below in the comments!

Ford Releases Video of Trail Testing The New Raptor

The F-150 Raptor was first introduced back in 2010, and from the very beginning the Raptor was made to go where other trucks fear to go. Enhancements like a wider body and performance-tuned suspension helped the Raptor negotiate any terrain.

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor was revealed this year at a number of auto shows. Redesigned and looking more capable and aggressive than ever, the Raptor garnered enormous attention—and that’s saying a lot, considering it was revealed right alongside the new Mustang and the new GT.

Ford recently released footage of trail testing the new Raptor. They released a few gifs and a video here showing the truck plowing through a tight, muddy trail and a small creek. They are the stuff to make you acutely jealous of a test driver.

The 2017 Ford Raptor will come outfitted with an “all-new four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand transfer case.” The technology deftly “manages power distribution between the front and rear wheels.”
